Throughout history, humans have used several means to preserve information, such as stone, wood, clay tablets, papyrus, parchment, paper, and more recently, electronic means. Digital platforms have acquired considerable relevance due to their capacity to store large volumes of information and to ensure better transport and review with the utilization of optical disks, flash drives, and external hard drives. Hence, access to information has been more popular and democratic, thanks to the publication of materials on the Web and email, thus favoring data transfer in an unprecedented way in history (Ana Paulina, 2012).

At present, the existing database with full texts or references, some of them with free access or by subscription, help social scientists have state-of-the-art trends in their fields of research. Among the largest, most prestigious, and private databases, the most outstanding are JSTOR, Project Muse, ProQuest, and EBSCO, which cover different areas of knowledge. The public databases, though smaller, include DOAJ, E-Revist@s, NSDL, and Redalyc (Ana Paulina, 2012).

According to Ana Paulina (2012), well-constituted history databases offer a series of features that facilitate the work of historians considerably. Some of these features are,

1.  Uniform information, in certain cases from various document sources, with a specific research topic, which helps researchers find very specific problems, where several entries can measure the research variables through their respective indicators.

2.  Automation and data mining speed.

3.  Flexibility, as changes can be introduced in the data structure and be updated.

4.  Data debugging with the ensuing removal of duplicates.

SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) is a model for scientific journal publishing on the Internet. Its main goal is to spread the diffusion and visibility of the science generated in Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, and Portugal.

Besides, it relies on a decentralized and cooperative model that pools national collections and research journals that meet certain quality criteria. SciELO's philosophy is to facilitate universal and free access to Latin American scientific journals, thus increasing their visibility.

SciELO (http://www.scielo.org) is part of the Virtual Health Library (VHL) (http://regional.bvsalud.org), a broader project including other information tools and sources, such as bibliographic databases, directories, virtual communities, and term base tools. Its methodology comprises standards, procedures, and computer applications for the electronic publishing of scientific journal collections. The fact that all the sites of this network are designed with the same methodology means that information is presented in the same form, permitting friendly user interaction, and facilitating surfing (Bojo Canales, 2009).

SciELO contributes to the creation and maintenance of a pool of quality scientific publications and provides the latest technological services and choices on the Web. The progressive growth of the project with new journals has enabled the creation of an alternative system for the current journal evaluation method, consisting of the inclusion of bibliometric tools that analyze the utilization and citation guidelines associated with such journals (Bojo Canales, 2009).

Databases are critical to store a large volume of information; the author-generated data can be used to ask questions and solve problems in any scientific area.

The first issue of Revista de Ciencia y Deporte in 2023 has been published under the SciELO database, though the editing staff had been previously working to submit scientific papers to the site. Several nationalities and institutions have submitted their manuscripts and published in this journal, contributing valuable information about the scientific relevance of Physical Education and Sports. The journal is committed to the preservation of the quality standard demanded by national and international bodies, with high-quality articles. It has also expressed the validity of open access, with a quality review of research articles.

The editorial staff, particularly the Director of the journal, wishes to express their gratitude to all the contributors in every volume published so far. An important mention should be made of all the specialists who have contributed with their experience and advisory so that from 2016 to the present, our journal kept its periodicity, punctuality, and quality, in every issue published, gradually improving editing.

Since last December, the issues published in 2022 are visible, and very soon, the first issue of 2023 will be available.

This new stage constitutes a commitment to the scientific community of Physical Culture, and it also is a call for all researchers to contribute with their manuscripts in favor of sports science development.
